Max:The Curse Of Brotherhood Review

Image
Lets cut to the chase right from the off! Max is a clever game that wants the player to be just as clever.
Many a time I would face a situation of, you need to get over to the other side but in your path are monsters or a watery grave or hell fire or just a drop to your instant death! So what to do?
This is where Max excels. The developer Flashbulb have done there homework on many of the games of the past generation and taken some of the best puzzle elements and gelled them together in there own special way to form one of the best 2.5D side scrolers I've played since Sonic back in the day.

Max "The Curse Of Brotherhood" as you may have guessed is a story about you, Max trying to find his annoying brother who Max actually 'wished' him to be banished but didn't expect to see him gobbled up by his TV.

And so your quest over 7 chapters start. You are not armed with guns, no knives, no fists. No you are armed with a.............Pen. This is one hell of a magic ma…

Warframe Plains of Eidolon Launches today on PlayStation 4. FREE

Image
I've lost count of how many hours I've spent on Warframe. We first went hands on way back before the launch of PS4 at Eurogamer 2013.

Warframe back at pre-launch.

Much has changed since then.

From the developer:

"Starting today, a new chapter begins with Plains of Eidolon on PS4. This massive, 2.5 X 2.5 kilometer territory is open, bristling with strange creatures, enemies, and surprises to explore, and it’s all free."

How the game looks now in the new world.

Gearbox Software......PLEASE bring back Brothers In Arms.

Image
The Brilliant Brothers In Arms

Thanks to Activision and Sledgehammer Games we have been taken back to World War 2 for our shooting fix. I've been wanting this for years, so much so that I was getting really fed up with game after game doing the modern run and gun thing. I kept putting it down to my age? But it turns out I'm not on my own.

I grew up with PlayStation, like many others in the late teens or in my case early 20's. Medal Of Honor was my first real WW2 shooter and at the time it was simply mind blowing. Other games arrived and were great but the best in my opinion was Gearbox Software's Brothers in Arms.

This was the thinking mans shooter, no by numbers holding the hand here. Think, plan, manoeuvre and out flank the enemy. Brilliant stuff. It was like Band Of Brothers the game. Anyone who'd ran about as a child playing soldiers loved BIA. You were playing in real settings photographed from real battlegrounds. You were fighting in the shoes of real heroes …

Can't wait.

PlayStation Online gets a new look and look back to when it all started

Image
PlayStation Online has been going for over 10 years now. I have personally been gaming for some mere 40 years. Quite frightening.
I remember sitting in my mates house with a ZX Spectrum loading tape cassettes with that sound filling your head, yeah the one you'd still hear when trying to get to sleep. I remember my Mum typing for two days on an Acorn Electron to witness a very blocky looking tank move forward and fire one shot..........two days.
I remember the cutting edge Atari 2600 at Christmas. Space Invaders and Asteroids. Wow! The Sega Master System 2 was next for me and Sonic. How fast? I remember no saves and getting near the end just to fail and start all over again.

Then...............PlayStation. I got it from Toys R Us in Chester and raced home. I bought Crash Bandicoot and Star Wars Rebel Assault 2. It was mind blowing at the time and the first Tomb Raider.....say no more. Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Ressi, Gran Turismo......the list is endless. PlayStation was here.

Spintires:MudRunner PlayStation 4 Review

Image
As most people turn to get there racing fix from GT Sport there is a game rolling over the hill and down a slippery muddy hill, in a big fat truck. MudRunner will be so far away from anything you've played before, on any wheels come to that.

Never having played a game like this before I have to be very careful on how to review it. You see not being familiar with this type of genre I'm having to be very open minded. I see this game as a puzzle game on wheels, VERY big wheels. You have tasks and have to solve them. Most are fetch and carry but you have to plan on the best way to achieve your objective. You have various 'rigs' at your disposal and using these to plan ahead and get the job done. You can even get online and team up in a co-op mode to half the burden and use team tactics to get the missions done.

You can choose different trailers, carriers, cranes, pulleys etc etc and this choosing of the right tools and vehicle is crucial. You will get stuck, see my epic f…

AER: Memories Of Old Review for PlayStation 4

Image
Daedalic Entertainment and developer forgotten key are very brave. To go up against the likes of Assassins Creed, Wolfenstein and Call of Duty is one hell of a statement. It's a cluttered time for game releases You must have lots of faith in a game to do this. Forgotten Key have been working on the game for five years and have pored love into this project and you can tell. Words like "beautiful" "charming" and "relaxing" are not out of place when describing this game.  I found my time playing a totally stress free and engaging experience.

At first glance you'd think you were looking at Sony's very own Tearaway. The world in AER is broken into sections that you can explore from the moment you get outside of the first dungeon. Playing as a girl, a shapshifter you can transform into a bird and sore high about the world on your quest to restore order and solve the mystery. The transformation is seamless with a double tap of the X button. As you f…

Sony profits rise 346% thanks to strong performance from PlayStation gaming unit.

Image
Sony reported fiscal second-quarter earnings and revenue that beat forecasts thanks to a strong performance from its PlayStation gaming business, and said it expects its best profit since 1998.

The Japanese electronic giant reported the following numbers for the three months to September 30:
Sales of 2.06 trillion Japanese yen ($18.2 billion) vs 1.86 trillion yen expected, according to Reuters data. This was also a 22.1 percent year-on-year rise.
Operating profit of 204 billion yen vs 135.6 billion yen expected. This market a 346.4 percent rise.

Sony also raised its dividend in the second quarter to 12.50 Japanese yen from 10 Japanese yen.

The Japanese giant said it now expects operating income for the year ending March 31 to be 630 billion Japanese yen. If realized, this would be the highest ever profit for the company since its record-breaking year in 1998 when it earned 526 billion yen. During this period, Sony's first PlayStation console was proving very successful.

Sony Storm Paris with one of the strongest shows in years!

Image
Rumours started flying about on the internet about what Sony had kept behind from E3 2017 as they really only did what they had to in the Summer with no bells and whistles. What Sony did this afternoon was cool, calm but above all........ruthless.
Our Jim took to the stage and in his very British way, smiled, even winked and looked smug as hell as one game after another rolled out. They even managed to turn Monster Hunter World into a huge Horizon Zero Dawn epic by adding Aloy and a robo cat. Genius. Spider-Man swung in, Shadow Of The Colossus, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, God Of war and to top it all an almost movie-like Last of Us 2 was shown as was the incredible looking make-the-story-yourself Detroit:Become Human. So many PSVR games were shown. In fact Sony needed the good old trusty panel to show off lots of games before the show even started!

If anyone was in any doubt about Sony's drive and intent then they wont now. You don't need the most powerful console to lead; you …

Observer Review for PlayStation 4

Image
I remember as a teenager an actor that stood out for me and a movie, that movie was Wanted Dead Or Alive staring Rutger Hauer. I was made up to learn that he would be playing the main character in the new horror game from Bloober Team.
You play as Daniel an investigator, receiving a call from his son asking for help which leads him to an apartment block that gets locked down as soon as he has entered, cutting it off from the outside world. The block is full of mad, strange tenants that remain locked behind doors where interacting with them comes through a game of door knocking to try to solve riddles and find out what has happened to your son.
The game soon gets very bloody and anyone with the faintest admiration for jump scare games or who are in any way won over by mad trippy mind bending soul searching are in for a treat. Observer starts off slow but intriguing. You visit your sons apartment to find a 'mess', to search through this to gather clues you have a scanner to vi…

Sudden Strike 4 Road to Dunkirk Review

Image
Action from Dunkirk on PlayStation 4 Pro

Everyone knows the history of the evacuation of Dunkirk, if not then Google it to read all about how the ordinary man and woman raised the bar and took to the see in a daring mission, unarmed and under fire, crossed the English channel to rescue the stranded British troops in France with the brave French fighting off the German advance. Now reenact that in the excellent Sudden Strike 4 DLC pack Road To Dunkirk.

We gave Sudden Strike 4 9/10 in our review. After playing more and now playing the add-on I stand buy that score. SS4 grows on you. It's challenging gameplay pushes you to think of how you'd plan things in real life situations. Go it all guns and it will end with all your units in tatters.
The two allied missions have you standing up to the overpowering German advance. You now have 10 new units at your disposal but what steals the show is the navel strike you can now call in. I sat on my sofa as shells whizzed overhead from the s…

theHunter:Call of the wild PlayStation 4 review

Image
Developer:Avalanche Studios.

Playing the Hunter Call of the wild has taught me many things over the weekend. The main thing is that I have no problems whatsoever mowing down humans one after another, in a game world of course but the guilt I felt after shooting a rabbit while it was playing with others left me repeating, "It's only a game, It's only a game" as I looked down at the said bunny!

I'm not a hunter but I've been curious about these games from the PlayStation 2 days. Sure you can get them easily now with multi region and access to the other stores but they are mainly sold over the water. I'd seen the screens and previews before but you can easily be fooled by pre-launch hype shots and tarted up movies. When I first spawned into the game world I completely missed what the narrator was saying to me and I had to start again. You see I was distracted by what was before me.
This distraction has not stopped hours and hours into the game. The world yo…

Hellblade dev marked World Mental Health Day by donating game sales to charity

Image
This is old but something that needs to mentioned again. Developer Ninja Theory marked World Mental Health Day by donating all proceeds from today's sales of the game (October 10th) to mental health charity, Rethink.

Rethink is a UK organization that supports and campaigns for those severely affected by mental health issues. The group wants to help those affected by the invisible illness by challenging and changing attitudes.

Hellblade's protagonist Senua, suffers from psychosis, and both critics and fans have praised the way the game delicately and intelligently represents the condition.

Ninja Theory has put together a new game trailer for the occassion, but instead of featuring buzzwords and marketing jargon, this one spotlights messages sent in by Hellblade players keen to share their own mental health experiences.

Donations will only be taken (after sales tax and platform fees) from PS4 and PC purchases made on October 10, so if you've been waiting for a good oppor…
