PS4 Chief Architect Talks About the Console

Mark Cerny the PS4s lead architect has been speaking to Gamasutra about the device.

He says that Sony began thinking about the PS4 in 2007 looking back at how the PS3 had performed.

He said that Sony did not want the PS4 to be a puzzle programmers had to solve to make quality titles.

" The PlayStation 3 was very powerful, but its unfamiliar CELL processor stymied developers. "There was huge performance there, but in order to unlock that performance, you really needed to study it and learn unique ways of using the hardware," said Cerny. "

He repeatedly commented on how the PS4s architecture was designed to be as familiar as possible to developers.

Talking about the GPU he commented that they took the best one currently available and modified it heavily.

" It's ATI Radeon. Getting into specific numbers probably doesn't help clarify the situation much, except we took their most current technology, and performed a large number of modifications to it. "

He also believes that the GPU will be used for more than graphics in the future.

"The vision is using the GPU for graphics and compute simultaneously," he said. "Our belief is that by the middle of the PlayStation 4 console lifetime, asynchronous compute is a very large and important part of games technology."

and Sony made a number of custom modifications to ensure that this is possible and the data busses do not become a bottleneck in the system.

Talking about the amount and speed of RAM which has received a lot of praise he had this to say:

"The 'supercharged' part, a lot of that comes from the use of the single unified pool of high-speed memory," said Cerny. The PS4 packs 8GB of GDDR5 RAM that's easily and fully addressable by both the CPU and GPU. "

He finished off by saying that he believes the launch lineup will be the strongest for a Playstation device ever.

"The launch lineup for PlayStation 4 -- though I unfortunately can’t give the title count -- is going to be stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware. And that's a result of that familiarity,"

PS4 May be Cheaper than the PS3, Interview with Michael Denny Suggests

Edge Online has interviewed Sony Worldwide Studios’ vice president Michael Denny and he has hinted that the PS4 may be cheaper than the PS3.

When asked questions related to the price of the PS4 he had this to say:

" we listen and learn and take the judgement from every console launch we ever have ... We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that’s deep, connected, rich and immersive "

When asked directly if the PS4 will launch at a more competitive price point he had this to say:

" There’s plenty of time, we’ve got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions. "

Gamers in the broadest sense suggests that they want to target casual gamers who have been attracted to gaming via smart phones, so the price would need to be a lot cheaper than PS3 at launch to attract those.

We'll have to wait and see ....

Battlefield 4 Developer Calls Motion Controls a 'Gimmick'

Speaking with Edge Online executive producer at DICE, Patrick Bach has said that despite the fact people were throwing money at them to include motion controls in BF4 but there are no plans to include them in the game.

"We are not interested in things that don't make the game better," Bach said. "There are a lot of gimmicks — people throwing money at us — ‘can you implement support for this quirky control thing'. No, it doesn't make the game better."

He says the studio is open to innovations but only if it adds value to the player.

"We are extremely open to innovation, but if it’s a gimmick, there’s no point unless it adds value to the player. Touch screens used to be a gimmick, because no-one could get it to work until iPhone came out and used it right. It adds to the experience, and now everyone is doing it. To us it’s the same with motion control and perceptual gaming in general; if it adds, great. If it’s a gimmick, ignore it.”

This probably isn't what Sony want to hear after they have included motion control capabilities in all Dual Shock 4 controllers.

Ubisoft Talks about Next Gen

In an interview with IGN Ubisoft has talked about the next generation of gaming.

They highlighted that the next generation of gaming will be about connected experiences, something Sony has focused on with the PS4's features such as assisting a friend in game.

“As far as being creative and showing what our studios can do, I think Ubisoft is well-positioned. We can’t wait,” Mallat told IGN. “For us, next-gen will definitely be connected experiences, but also social experiences, more immersive, and more interactive. First, we should start seeing that in a while. This cycle has been a long one. We really wanted the new consoles to come along. We’re happy to see that, based on what we saw from Sony last month. We definitely share the same visions. In terms of opportunities, I would say that there is a great momentum on everything that revolves already around the consumer’s way of spending his entertainment time. This is good news for us. Of course, every transition, every new machine, every new system, brings new opportunities for being more creative and for showing what a studio can do.”

They also said that the work they have done on high end PCs will pay off when developing for the PS4.

" we made probably the right call by going with the high-end PC versions a while ago already. Again, it’s been a long cycle. Without anything else, our own vision of what next-gen could be at the time, we bet on high-end PC. All the R&D and the work on our tools and pipelines and engines are starting to pay off. This is why we’ve been able to show playable code at Sony’s events, even last month. We were already working on those engines.”

Criterion Moving Away From Racing Games

In multiple tweets, Criterion chief Alex Ward has said that the studio will not be making the next Burnout or Need for Speed games.

Burnout is still one of the classic games on the PS3 and holds up to modern racers, 5 years after it's release.
